Zoho has offered an iOS app for a while now — at least for the iPhone and iPod touch. Those of you who have been wanting to use the Zoho app on your iPad were out of luck, but that’s no longer the case.

Zoho Docs 2.0 has landed in the App Store, and the most notable change is that it’s now a universal app. Now you’re able to take advantage of the app’s mobile productivity powers on your larger iOS device. Retina display support has also been added, as have document sharing options — which you can utilize in both the viewer and collaboration modes.

Just like the basic Zoho service, the app is available totally free of charge. Paid subscriptions get you additional storage space and start at $3 per month for professional use.

Security firm RSA attacked using Excel-Flash one-two sucker punch

RSA attacked using Flash vulnerability

It has emerged that the underlying cause of RSA’s SecurID gaffe was the recently-reported zero-day vulnerability found in Adobe’s Flash Player.

The exploit, which used specially-crafted Flash embedding in Excel spreadsheets, was first reported on March 15 and has since been fixed. RSA was hacked sometime in the first half of March when an employee was successfully spear phished and opened an infected spreadsheet. As soon as the spreadsheet was opened, an advanced persistent threat (APT) — a backdoor Trojan — called Poison Ivy was installed. From there, the attackers basically had free reign of RSA’s internal network, which led to the eventual dissemination of data pertaining to RSA’s two-factor authenticators.

The attack is reminiscent of the APTs used in the China vs. Google attacks from last year — and indeed, Uri Rivner, the head of new technologies at RSA is quick to point out that that other big companies are being attacked, too: “The number of enterprises hit by APTs grows by the month; and the range of APT targets includes just about every industry. Unofficial tallies number dozens of mega corporations attacked [...] These companies deploy any imaginable combination of state-of-the-art perimeter and end-point security controls, and use all imaginable combinations of security operations and security controls. Yet still the determined attackers find their way in.”

What we’d like to know, though, is whether the attack on RSA was caused by Adobe’s lackadaisical approach to patching Flash — or was it the other way around? Was it the RSA attack that first brought the zero-day vulnerability to Adobe’s attention?

HTC Roadshow: Hands-on video with the HTC Sensation

 AC on HTC Sensation

We took a trip down to the HTC Roadshow in Manchester yesterday, where we were lucky enough to be allowed some face-time with the HTC Sensation, HTC’s beastly 4.3-inch dual-core device, which is due for release in May. And, of course, we were sure to grab plenty of video footage and photos of the artist formerly known as Pyramid for your perusal.

The Sensation is the first device to launch with HTC Sense 3.0, the new version of HTC’s custom UI that gives it its biggest overhaul to date. Though the handset we saw was still running pre-release firmware, we were still impressed with the slickness of the user experience it offered.

Join us after the jump for the video itself, along with some bonus photos from the HTC Roadshow.

Add playback hotkeys to Amazon Cloud Player with a Chrome extension

Sure, Amazon’s Cloud Player works — as long as you’re in the U.S. or willing to do some tinkering — but it’s fairly simplistic at the moment. There are plenty of features missing which we’d like to see added — but since Cloud Player is a Web app we don’t have to wait for Amazon!

Google Chrome users, for example, can add playback hotkeys with an extension called keyMazony. Once installed, you’ll have keyboard control of your Amazon Cloud Player queue. keyMazony commands will work as long as you’re in the same Chrome window as Cloud Player, even if its tab doesn’t have focus. The key combinations are customizable as well — just make sure you don’t set up a combo that conflicts with another extension or Chrome’s built-in keyboard shortcuts.

Chrome 11 beta adds new experimental APIs for proxies, Web navigation

google chrome 11 proxy
Google Chrome 11 — which just recently made the move to the browser’s beta channel — has received a minor update that gives developers access to two new APIs.

The first is a full-featured proxy API, which will, for example, allow users to set different proxy servers for normal browsing and Incognito mode. Proxy auto-config scripts are also supported by the API.

The second — Web Navigation Extension — is a bit more expansive. This API will allow devs to build everything from more powerful safe browsing extensions — like Traffic Light — to data analysis and reporting extensions.

Both APIs are currently experimental, so you’ll need to enable them on the about:flags page to try out any relevant extensions. Apart from a proxy example built by Google and shipped with the Chromium source, we’re not aware of any examples just yet, however. We’ll let you know when we spot any slick, new extensions which do surface.

Congressman, Senator Seeks Answers From Steve Jobs About iOS Tracking File

Posted 24 เม.ย. 2011 — by joyroudh
Category ไม่มีหมวดหมู่
As the furball around a recently publicized hidden iOS location tracking file continues to expand, both a senator and a congressman have sent separate letters to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, asking about the file and why it is unencrypted. At the same time, it seems the discovery is not a discovery after all.

Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), sent a letter dated Wednesday, April 20 to Apple CEO Steve Jobs (.PDF), in which he said (in part):

[...] because the data is stored in multiple locations in unencrypted format, there are various ways that third parties could gain access to this file. Anyone who finds a lost or stolen iPhone or iPad or who has access to any computer used to sync one of these devices could easily download and map out a customer’s precise movements for months at a time. It is also entirely conceivable that malicious persons may create viruses to access this data from customers’ iPhones, iPads, and desktop and laptop computers. There are numerous ways in which this information could be abused by criminals and bad actors

Franken also asked the following questions, of which it would be interesting to see an official Apple response:

  1. Why does Apple collect and compile this location data? Why did Apple choose to initiate tracking this data in its iOS 4 operating system?
  2. Does Apple collect and compile this location data for laptops?
  3. How is this data generated? (GPS, cell tower triangulation, WiFi triangulation, etc.)
  4. How frequently is a user’s location recorded? What triggers the creation of a record of someone’s location?
  5. How precise is this location data? Can it track a user’s location to 50 meters, 100 meters, etc.?
  6. Why is this data not encrypted? What steps will Apple take to encrypt this data?
  7. Why were Apple consumers never affirmatively informed of the collection and retention of their location data in this manner? Why did Apple not seek affirmative consent before doing so?
  8. Does Apple believe that this conduct is permissible under the terms of its privacy policy? See Apple Privacy Policy at “Location-Based Services” (accessed on April 20, 2011),
  9. available at www.apple.com/privacy.
  10. To whom, if anyone, including Apple, has this data been disclosed? When and why were these disclosures made?

On Thursday, Franken was joined by Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA). He also sent a letter to Steve Jobs, but he asked Jobs about the possible effect of this file on minors. After all, iDevices are quite popular with minors, and Markey asked:

Given the widespread usage of iPhones and iPads by individuals under the age of 18, is Apple concerned that the wide array of precise location data logged by these devices can be used to track minors, exposing them to potential harm? If yes, what is Apple doing to reduce the potential for such harm? If not, why not?

However, it seems that the discovery made by the two researchers, Allan and Warden, and disclosed on Wednesday wasn’t a discovery at all. The hidden file in iPad 3Gs and iPhones that contained tons of location data had previously been detailed, by one Alex Levinson, a student at the Rochester Institute of Technology, who says he discovered this file back in 2007, as part of his research and work with forensic firm Katana Forensics.

Why, then, did no one notice it then? And why did no one listen to Levinson on Wednesday, when he was reportedly emailing media about it?

First, in 2007, he published the research in “Hawaii International Conference for System Sciences 44.” If he really wanted to get some attention, there is nothing wrong with that, but perhaps clueing in CNN might help. [In all fairness, however, he also contributed a chapter to a book on iOS forensic analysis, "iOS Forensic Analysis: for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch," which although it is certainly not a NYT bestseller, ranks 31 on Amazon.com for books on Security and Encryption. One would think that might have brought some attention to the matter.]In a blog post, Levinson said the following:

This hidden file is nether new nor secret. It?s just moved. Location services have been available to the Apple device for some time. Understand what this file is ? log generated by the various radios and sensors located within the device. This file is utilized by several operations on the device that actually is what makes this device pretty ?smart?.

Through my work with various law enforcement agencies, we?ve used h-cells.plist on devices older than iOS 4 to harvest geolocational evidence from iOS devices.

Yep, you read that correctly: it’s already being used by law enforcement. He spoke to GigaOM, and there was more:

[...] the press missed the story first time around, and now seems more focussed on the horror of data storage than the reality (there, for example, is no evidence that the data is sent back to Apple at the moment).

?I do blame the press somewhat for sensationalizing them without recourse,? he says. ?I emailed 20 of the top media outlets who covered this, linking them to my side ? none of them replied, except a famous blogger who cursed me.?

Although this isn’t new news, it’s certainly news. The fact of the matter is that despite the fact that the data isn’t being sent back to Apple (yet), the data is stored unencrypted on the device and on your computer. That’s pretty risky. As far as what the file is there for, Daring Fireball believes it’s a bug, and that it was the log file was supposed to be culled. If that were true, however, then that “bug” has been around since 2007, according to Levinson’s findings.

Yahoo! Messenger now censors the links you share

Yahoo Messenger Big Brother censorshipWe’ve all thought it, but never dared think it could be true: what if Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL actively monitor our instant messenger chats? What if mentions of ‘bomb’ and ‘underage’ are tracked and sent to law enforcement agencies? What if chat providers don’t agree with the things we say, or the links we share, and filter or censor the content of our transmitted messages?

Well, it looks like our fears may actually have some basis in reality: Yahoo Messenger strips FilesTube links from instant messages. It doesn’t tell either party that a URL has been removed from chat — it just deletes it. Poof. FilesTube, in case you were wondering, is one of the largest file hosting meta search engines on the Web — it indexes RapidShare, Megaupload, Mediafire, and many other ‘cyberlocker’ services.

It’s fairly obvious why FilesTube links are being removed — the Censor General at Yahoo is probably one of those perplexed primates who think all uses of BitTorrent are illegal — but this situation poses a far more important question: is Yahoo censoring messages on the client side, or the server side. Does the messenger client itself maintain a list of ‘blacklisted’ words — and if so, why are we not told that FilesTube links are banned? What other words and terms does Yahoo protect us from?

Vodafone UK accidentally sells White iPhone 4, says it will officially drop ?next week?

Posted 23 เม.ย. 2011 — by joyroudh
Category ไม่มีหมวดหมู่

Adding to recent rumors of the White iPhone 4 possibly shipping on April 26 come more from Engadget, this time in the form of images from a Vodafone UK customer who was lucky enough to get their hands on one a little early. After Vodafone realized one had gotten loose, they sent out a notice to halt all sales of the White iPhone 4 until next week.

we?ve secured a few images of a 16GB model from a separate source that has seemingly made its way into the hands of one lucky customer (read: bloke) over in Britain [...] Voda sent out a notice to halt sale of these gems ?until next week.?

Apparently a Vodafone sales rep rang up the White iPhone 4 as a Black 16gb model in their point-of-sale system before the company told its employees not to sell units carrying the MC604B/A model number. The current UK 16gb Black iPhone 4 has a model number of MC603B/A, with the ?4? presumably representing the difference in color for that capacity.

Apple has repeatedly gone on the record saying the White iPhone 4 would come out ?this spring?, but that window is quickly closing. With these new images could we actually be on the verge of seeing real unicorns White iPhone 4 units in-hand by the month?s end? Let us know what you think in the comments and hit the jump for more photos!
