Silver jewelry does not require a store purchased cleaner in order to achieve a bright and clean surface. A very effective silver cleaner can be made from basic ingredients found in the cupboard. Salt, baking soda and water, when mixed together and heated, cause a chemical reaction that cleans silver jewelry effectively.

Material Required:

Baking Soda
Salt
Water
Measuring Spoons
Wooden Spoon
Aluminum Foil
Cake Pan
Sauce Pan
Towel
Soft Cotton Cloth
Potholders

Process:

A cake pan is used to lay the silver jewelry out flat to clean. Choose a pan that is the appropriate size. Line the pan with aluminum foil so the shiny side is facing out. Place the jewelry on the aluminum foil surface so none of the jewelry is touching or overlapping.

Put enough water into a sauce pan to adequately cover the silver jewelry. Bring the water to boil then add one tablespoon of baking soda and one tablespoon of salt. Stir until both ingredients are dissolved.

Carefully pout the boiling baking soda and salt solution over the silver jewelry. Only use enough of the solution to cover the items completely. Pout out any excess in the sink.

All the baking soda and salt solution to cool. This is when the chemical reaction is occurring. The aluminum foil acts like a magnet. The chemical reaction breaks down the grim and patina on the surface of the silver jewelry. The aluminum foil pulls the grim and patina to the bottom of the pan.

Remove the silver jewelry once the water has cooled. Place the items on a soft towel to air dry. Shine the silver jewelry with a soft cotton cloth. The soft cotton cloth will buff away and remaining grime.

This homemade silver jewelry cleaner is non-toxic and safe for the environment. The cost is just pennies and performs as effectively, if not better than, commercial cleaners.
